A nominee is the person you name to receive a defined payout if you die. On PMJJBY and PMSBY you name them when you give the auto-debit consent. The bank or the post office keeps that form. If the member dies, the nominee fills the claim-cum-discharge form. The official wording asks for it preferably within 30 days: of the death for PMJJBY, and of the accident for PMSBY.

Open calculatorIf the nominee is under 18, you also name an appointee, and the appointee signs the claim. If you never named a nominee, or the nominee died first, the form is for the legal heirs, and they attach proof of that status. A PMSBY disability claim is different. The member is alive, so the member fills the form, not the nominee.
The papers are proof of the event, a KYC document of the person claiming, and a cancelled cheque or account statement for the account that should be paid. The nominee also signs a line that this death or accident has not already been claimed on another bank or post office account. That line matches the scheme rule: one person, one account. A second PMJJBY premium does not raise the ₹2,00,000 cap.
The advance receipt on the form is how the nominee discharges the insurer. The amount on a PMJJBY receipt is ₹2,00,000. A PMSBY receipt is ₹2,00,000 or ₹1,00,000, matching the event. The scheme guide lists which death proof and which accident proof the form accepts.
A nomination is not a will, and it is not a tax exemption. It tells the insurer whom to pay under that scheme. The family still deals with the rest of the estate on its own papers.
A different nomination
Shares from an IPO sit in the demat account. The nomination that covers them is the one registered with the depository participant, not the PMJJBY form. Once the registrar credits the shares, that demat nomination applies. The IPO application guide is where the demat account enters the bid. Update both nominations when the person you would want paid has changed. An old name on either form is who gets asked to sign.
The FIRE calculator does not store a nominee. It only sizes the gap a ₹2,00,000 cover leaves. Write the name while you are opening the consent, not after a claim has started. A blank nominee line is how a simple debit turns into a legal-heir file.
Questions
Who files a PMJJBY claim?
The nominee, preferably within 30 days of the death. If the nominee is a minor, the appointee signs. If there is no nominee, the legal heirs claim.
Is a demat nominee the same as a PMJJBY nominee?
No. The demat nomination covers shares in that account, including IPO shares once they are credited. PMJJBY and PMSBY nominations sit on the insurance consent at the bank or post office. Name both.
Can the nominee be paid twice on two bank accounts?
The claim form asks the nominee to declare that the same death has not already been paid on another account. PMJJBY cover stays capped at ₹2,00,000 if a second premium was collected by mistake.
