You pay 12% of basic pay plus dearness allowance. Your employer pays the same 12%. Your whole share goes into the provident fund. Anything you pay above 12% is a voluntary contribution, and that stays in the provident fund too.
Of the employer’s 12%, 8.33% of wages up to the notified ceiling goes to the pension fund. The rest of the employer’s 12% stays in the provident fund. The Centre also pays 1.16% towards the pension, limited to the same ceiling. That government share is pension money. It is not in this corpus.
This page calculates both 12% shares on the basic plus DA you type. If your employer restricts the provident fund to the wage ceiling, type that ceiling as the wage. The pension switch then only changes how much of the employer’s 12% is diverted. “On full basic + DA” uses 8.33% of the whole wage. A higher-pension member can instead pay 9.49% of pensionable wages (8.33% plus the Centre’s 1.16%). The pension share here stays at 8.33%.
How a year of interest is credited
The opening balance earns interest for all twelve months. A contribution earns interest from the next month, so a deposit in April earns eleven months and a deposit in March earns none that year. The twelve monthly interests are added, rounded to the nearest rupee, and credited at the end of the year. The next year, that interest earns interest too.
8.25% is the declared EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26. The calculator starts there. A later year can be declared at a different rate. One rate is used for the whole run unless you move the slider.
A worked example
Basic plus DA is ₹30,000 a month. Age is 28 and retirement is 58, so the run is 30 years. The EPF balance today is ₹1,50,000. Pay does not rise. Your share is 12% and the employer pays 12%, with the pension share capped at the ceiling.
Each month you put in ₹3,600. The pension fund gets ₹2,083. The employer’s provident-fund share is ₹1,517. Year 1 interest is ₹14,697 and the balance closes at ₹2,26,101.
At 58 the corpus is ₹91,76,398. You contributed ₹12,96,000. The employer’s provident-fund share is ₹5,46,120. Interest is ₹71,84,278. At 5.5% inflation, a planning assumption, that corpus is ₹18,41,189 in today’s rupees. The pension share over the 30 years is ₹7,49,880, and it is not inside the ₹91,76,398.
Voluntary contribution, PPF, and tax
A voluntary contribution is extra money you choose to add, above 12% of basic plus DA. It goes into your EPF. The employer does not have to match it. PPF is a separate account, with its own yearly cap and a government rate. EPF is tied to your job. PPF is an account you open yourself.
Interest on your own EPF contributions above ₹2,50,000 in a year is marked taxable here. If the employer puts nothing into the fund, the line is ₹5,00,000. A separate 2026 rule can tax interest credited above a rate the Centre notifies. The withdrawal guide explains that rule. Until that rate is published, this page applies only the ₹2,50,000 and ₹5,00,000 lines.
Your own 12% can be claimed under Section 123 only outside Section 202, and only inside the shared ₹1,50,000 cap. A full withdrawal after five years of continuous service is the main exclusion. The EPF withdrawal guide covers partial claims, the 25% you must leave, and TDS.

Questions
Does the pension share sit inside the EPF corpus?
No. 8.33% of wages up to the notified wage ceiling goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme. This calculator shows that amount beside the corpus. It is not added to the balance you can withdraw as EPF.
How is the interest worked out?
Interest uses the monthly running balance and is credited once a year. Last year’s closing balance earns twelve months. A contribution earns interest from the first day of the next month. The year’s interest is rounded to the nearest rupee. Fifty paise rounds up.
What is the wage ceiling now?
From 17 Sept 2026 the notified ceiling is ₹25,000 a month. Before that it was ₹15,000. On the older ceiling, 8.33% rounded to ₹1,250 a month. On the current ceiling it rounds to ₹2,083 when wages are at least the ceiling.
Is the interest tax-free?
This calculator marks interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a year as taxable. The line is ₹5 lakh when the employer puts nothing into the fund. A withdrawal has a separate five-year rule. Read the EPF withdrawal guide before you treat a figure as the tax you will pay.
